Lotus Cup Race Report - Round 1 - Winton Victoria

At one point we looked like we would have 7 cars lining up in the X-2 class for Round 1 (Exige only) however last minute deals, transport and broken exhausts conspired to leave us with 4 cars, 7 drivers, the Federal Tyres Elise, and some of the most changeable weather I have seen at Winton for a long time.

Many thanks to the following drivers and teams for making the effort and giving it their all at the inaugural round.

John Pagonas - United Telecommunications
Evan Daley / Nathan Stevens - Medina Apartments
Azim Sahu-Khan / Luke Youlden - Federal Tyres
Darren Orchard / Darren Laudenbach - G & H Aluminum

Thanks must also go to all those who came to support the teams and of course to Brett and the boys from Federal Tyres who have thrown their support 100% behind the programme and during the course of the weekend sold tyres to competitors in other categories and fielded a number of enquires that I am sure will lead to further sales. Way to go Federal.

The TV broadcast should air by the 20th of this month however I will send out a flash as soon as I have a date confirmed. It should be a good show with some stuff from the Federal Launch, driver profiles and of course the race itself.

We now have 7 weeks before Round 2 and the X-3 (Elise) class joining us. We have a number of guys who are looking for co-drivers and there are a number of Elise still available. I drove one of the rebuilt cars on the track and it was like a brand new car.

Anyway there will be newsletter coming out in the next few days so have a read of the race report and get your team together before the next round. Exiges can drop their worst 2 rounds but every one of the Elise rounds count. So it is not too late to get involved but after this round you will be pushing it up hill.

Cheers Azim Sahu-Khan

Qualifying

Saturday saw sunny weather albeit a little cool with the track in fairly good condition with the previous practice day laying down a fair bit of rubber.

The majority of drivers were also now used to the progressive and responsive nature of the Federal 595 RS.

The exceptions were Luke Youlden and John Pagonas who had yet to turn a wheel with their respective teams.

Session 1

Session 1 lasted 15 minutes which allowed each driver to complete 9 laps.  The 595 RS seemed to give up it's best times on lap 3-4.

Session results were.

1. Azim Sahu-Khan        1:40.7306

2. Darren Laudenbach    1:41.3350

3. Evan Daley                1:42.0745

Session 2

Session 2 saw the arrival of Luke Youlden and a demonstration of what a professional racer can do despite never having been in the car before or on the new rubber.  The Team Medina and Team G & H Aluminum battled it out saving their best laps for the last two of the seven lap session leaving a gap of 2/100ths of a second between them.

1.  Luke Youlden           1:39.0934

2.  Nathan Stevens       1:41.6428

3.  Darren Orchard        1:41.6614

Session 3

Session 3 saw John Pagonas join the fray after racing up from Melbourne at lunch time after a work commitment.  With what he thought was a fairly safe pole position for the Federal tyres team, Azim went out and to find the limit of the Federal tyres at various points of the track and had a few harmless spins (I guess he found the limit).  Even so he did better his first session time by about 4 tenths.  What he didn't' expect was the absolute corker of a lap John Pagonas pulled out to record a time almost 1 second clear of Luke Youldens best time.

1. John Pagonas          1:37.9456

2. Azim Sahu-Khan      1:40.3109

3. Evan Daley              1:41.3988

4. Darren Laudenbach  1:41.9378

So the final wash up was

1. John Pagonas            1:37.9456

2. Luke Youlden            1:39.0934

3. Azim Sahu-Khan        1:40.3109

4. Darren Laudenbach    1:41.3350

5.  Evan Daley               1:41.3988

6.  Nathan Stevens        1:41.6428

7.  Darren Orchard         1:41.6614

Race

By the end of Saturday the skies around Benalla and Winton were looking rather ominous and lo and behold  during the evening the heavens opened and the rain remained fairly consistent until the morning.

In the lead up to the 11am start the weather was patch but then appeared to break and the track started to dry however only half an hour before the scheduled start of the race the rain came down in torrents and the track was (and in-field) was well and truly soaked.

The cars commenced their rolling start with Pagonas leading Youlden into turn 1.  Evan Daley running in 4th misjudged the tricky conditions and tagged the rear of the G & H Aluminum car of the 'two Darrens' spinning both cars into the infield

No major damage was sustained and both cars returned to the fray albeit over half a lap down on the leading pair.

The rain had abated and their were varying levels of grip around the circuit.  Youlden over committed himself under brakes at end of the first lap and the Federal Tyres Exige gracefully slipped off the edge of the circuit leaving the United Telecommunications car of John Pagonas to lead the first lap by 16 seconds.

Youlden then set about trying to close the gap down until his first pit stop where he handed the car over to Sahu-Khan.  Pagonas pitted the lap after for the first of his mandatory 2 stops (Pagonas completed the race solo).

Some confusion in the Federal Tyres pit resulted in Sahu-Khan being called in after only 3 laps leaving Youlden not ready to resume driving duties (having only just got out of the car).  The decision was quickly made to allow Youlden to continue on to his last stint although he would be running close to the individual 'stint limit' of 25 minutes for any driver.  The team had lost a valuable 30 seconds in the stop.

Fortunately Youlden resumed the race in 3rd just ahead of Pagonas and did not lose a lap although he re-joined the race in 4th place.

Pagonas then pitted for his 2nd stop on lap 17 and reported an intermittent oil warning but chose to continue as he felt that it was manageable and rejoined the race ahead of Youlden.

With a drying track the scene was set for a fabulous run to the finish.

Pagonas was trying to drive at maximum speed without risking the engine and Youlden set about hunting him down.  Pagonas set his fastest lap of the race 3 laps from the end and Youlden set his fastest lap (and the fastest lap of the race) on his 27th and last lap.

Both drivers drove brilliantly in the tricky conditions with a number of 'power twitches' and on the last lap it appeared that the G&H Aluminum Exige might come into play as both cars were approaching it to put it a lap down.

Time ran out for the Federal Tyres Exige however crossing the line .33 seconds adrift of Pagonas.  The G&H Aluminum car did manage to stay on the lead lap to finish in 4th place.

Unfortunately for the Medina Apartments Exige of Daley / Stevens, Daley had exceeded the 'stint limit' by over a minute and after consultation with the clerk of the course the team was excluded from the results promoting Orchard / Laudenbach to 3rd place.

It was a thrilling race in that after 27 laps and 2 pit stops, 1st and 2nd were separated by less than half a second.  If this is an indication of things to come we are in for a cracker of a season.

Very exciting stuff and should make for some good TV. As you can see strategy plays a lot in this game in addition to outright speed. The teams need to be fast and smart and with the additional points scored for laps lead the strategy game gets even more complex. John Pagonas lead enough laps to add an additional 22 points to his tally which could give him a nice buffer should a future round not go as well for him.

What will further 'mix up' the issue will be the X-3 Elise cars join us from the next round. It will now make overtaking and getting clear laps that much more important and the slightest miscalculation could see a team throw the race away. Patience is the key here, we need to drive as much with our right foot as with our heads.

Look forward to seeing you at QR in June for round 2. Thanks again to all those who supported us and you need to find your partners now and get on board as this a very exciting championship and is like nothing that has gone before.

Special thanks also goes to Tony and Mick who made the trip down to ensure that all the cars remained on the track and in top shape for the weekend.
